Utah Law Amendment!

Nov
17
For those of you who are living in Utah, the sponsor of the homebrew legalization bill during the 2008 legislative session, Christine Johnson, has been re-elected to the Utah House and is again sponsoring the homebrew legalization bill.
The bill has a hearing this week on Wednesday November 19th at 2:15 in Room W025 of the House Building at the capitol in Salt Lake City.  The bill is being introduced to the Business and Labor Interim Committee.  I would highly encourage anyone who can attend to show up for this meeting in support of the “Exemption For Alcoholic Beverage Manufacturing License” bill.

You can find more details about the hearing at http://www.le.state.ut.us/asp/interim/Commit.asp?Year=2008&Com=INTBUS .

This is the proposed amendment to Utah Law giving people like myself the right to brew at home.  Lets go Utah!  You can do it!

(b) An individual may without being licensed under this chapter manufacture in the individual’s personal residence a fermented alcoholic beverage if:

(i) the individual is 21 years of age or older;

(ii) the individual manufactures no more than:

(A) 100 gallons in a calendar year, if there is one individual that is 21 years of age or older residing in the household; or

(B) 200 gallons in a calendar year, if there are two or more individuals who are 21 years of age or older residing in the household;

(iii) the fermented alcoholic beverage is manufactured and used for:

(A) personal or family use and consumption; or

(B) an organized event where fermented alcoholic beverages are judged as to taste and quality; and

(iv) the fermented alcoholic beverage is not for:

(A) sale or offering for sale; or

(B) consumption on a premise licensed by the commission.

(c) An individual may store a fermented alcoholic beverage manufactured as provided in Subsection (6)(b) in the individual’s personal residence.

(d) A fermented alcoholic beverage manufactured in accordance with Subsection (6)(b) may be removed from the premises where it is manufactured:

(i) for personal or family use, including use at an organized event where fermented alcoholic beverages are judged as to taste and quality; and

(ii) if the fermented alcoholic beverage is transported in compliance with Section 41-6a-526.

AHA Rally at Squatters

Nov
17

Last Friday, One Little Mexican and his wife attended the American Homebrewers Association rally held at Squatters brewery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

We were hosted by Squatters Head Brewer Jenny Talley.  She gave us a lot of good information, and also gave us a guided tour of the entire brewing facility.  It was really cool to see how a real micro brewery does their thing.  The equiptment they use and the process is so cool.  OLM can only dream of one day doing it like that.

We also got free appetizers and discounted pints, so of course we had to try a few.  They have a Vienna Lager and a Dunkel that are incredible.

Also, BTW - Jenny mentioned that Utah was finally going to make home brewing legal in the state this year.  That means we can have legitimate brewing clubs, and amateur competitions sponsored by real companies, and all that.  It should be huge for those of us that would like to sample other brews and see how our own stand up to the competition.

I encourage all the homebrewers out there to attend a rally if one is held in your area.  I am a member of the AHA, and I highly recomend it to any who are serious about becoming better brewers.

Cheers!

Amber Ale - First Taste

Oct

I cracked open the first Amber tonight!  Wow this is some good beer.  Kind of sweet, but so smooth and a really crisp taste, with a bit of a hoppy kick…  Good stuff!

Update on new batch - bottling done!

I bottled the Amber Ale today.  Should be drinkable in 10 to 14 days.  We’ll see.  I had a bit of a rough time with a couple things, but it looked and smelled good going into the bottles.

Stay tuned.  :)

Update #2 on the OLM Amber Ale

It’s been fermenting like crazy! We’ll be bottling in about 12 days or so. In light of the coming election we’re unofficially calling it Obama Amber Ale… check it out!

I ran into some delays, but finally brewed up the Amber last night.  It’s bubbling like mad today and fermentation is going strong!  Bottling in 2 weeks or so, drinking in a month!

We’ve got the recipe and the ingredients… now we just need to brew!  Since we just moved we’re still setting up the brewing area, but I hope to have it ready next week.

We are heading to Idaho this weekend, and will be sampling some good brews while there.

I hope to get the Amber brewed and fermenting by next weekend cause we’re about out of the English Ale.  We had a BBQ to celebrate our new location last weekend, and the majority vote was that our English Ale tasted similar to Newcastle Brown.  I will be happy with that outcome anytime!

More next week…

New batch coming soon

The English Ale is halfway gone already!  We have finally relocated and will be getting everything set up within the next week.  Hopefully I will have a batch fermenting within a week or so.  I’m hoping to make a good summer ale or something.  We’ll see.

Check back for updates in the next week or so.

OneLittleMexican in Chicago

Hola! OLM just got back from 5 days in Chicago! We sampled many fine brews while there, some local, some long time favorites. OLM had a headache for 4 of those 5 days and didn’t get much sleep. But it was a blast! The Windy city knows how to party.

Check out some pictures of the places we went and the people we met:
