Great update from Gary at the AHA!  Once the Gov signs the bill I can do what I love doing legally in my home state of Utah.  Its about time!

Subject: Utah Homebrew Bill Passes Legislature
Great News!
Today the Utah House passed the homebrew bill HB 51.  The vote was even stronger than their last vote, with 66 in favor and just 2 nays.
On Tuesday of this week, the House refused an amended version of the bill that was passed by the Senate, due to the overly Draconian restrictions on how homebrew could be used outside the home.  That sent it to a Conference Committee with 3 members each from the House and Senate, where a new less restrictive amendment (still not ideal, but much better than what had been proposed by the Senate) was drafted.
On Wednesday, the Senate passed the bill with the new amendment 23-3.
With both houses of the Utah legislature passing the bill by more than a 2/3 majority, the Governor will almost certainly sign the bill into law.  If he does, the law will then become effective as of May 12, 2009.
Congrats to all of the Utah homebrewers who have worked so hard over the past two years to make this happen!  Your persistent calls and emails to legislators, and attendance at committee hearings are what made this all possible.  It has truly been an honor for me to be involved in this process with you!

We’re making some progress!!  ~ O.L.M.

From Gary Glass with the AHA:

——————————————

January 30, 2009

Dear Utah AHA, BA and Support Your Local Brewery Members,

Thank you to everyone who attended the House Business and Labor Committee hearing or contacted the members of the committee on behalf of House Bill HB51 to legalize homebrewing in the state of Utah. Your efforts directly resulted in the bill being passed out of committee with a unanimous recommendation for passage by the full House.

The bill went to a vote before the full House the next day on Wednesday and passed by a 66 to 7 margin.

HB51 now moves on to the Senate, which unlike the House, did not see this bill in the 2008 session. As of yet, it has not been assigned to a Senate Committee, but that could happen at any time. You can track the bill’s progress at http://le.utah.gov/~2009/status/hbillsta/hb0051.htm.

Given how fast this bill has been moving through the legislature, we need you to ACT NOW to ensure passage by the Senate.

Please call or email your Senator and politely urge him/her to pass HB51. You can find contact information for your Senator at: http://www.le.state.ut.us/Documents/find.htm.

Thank you for your efforts in helping to make homebrewing legal in Utah!

Utah Law Amendment Update

Thursday, November 20th, 2008
Update from Gary at the AHA.  Great news for homebrewers in Utah!!

Subject: Utah Legalization One Step Closer
Hi All,
I am very please to announce that the bill to legalize homebrewing in Utah was passed by the Business and Labor Interim Committee Meeting with only one dissenting vote yesterday.  This clears the way for the bill to go to a vote before the full House in January, where it was passed last year.
By getting the bill on the docket before the start of the legislative session, we stand a much better chance of getting the bill passed by both the House and Senate in 2009.  In 2008, the bill died after passing the House because the legislative session ended before the bill had a chance to be voted on in the Senate.
The effort to legalize homebrewing in Alabama continues.  Earlier this Fall, the Alabama homebrewers held a fundraiser that generated over $7,000 that they can put towards the cause of legalizing homebrewing in that state.  They are planning a homebrew tasting for legislators to be held during the legislative session and are currently working on identifying potential sponsors for a homebrew legalization bill.
Cheers!

Utah Law Amendment!

Monday, November 17th, 2008
For those of you who are living in Utah, the sponsor of the homebrew legalization bill during the 2008 legislative session, Christine Johnson, has been re-elected to the Utah House and is again sponsoring the homebrew legalization bill.
The bill has a hearing this week on Wednesday November 19th at 2:15 in Room W025 of the House Building at the capitol in Salt Lake City.  The bill is being introduced to the Business and Labor Interim Committee.  I would highly encourage anyone who can attend to show up for this meeting in support of the “Exemption For Alcoholic Beverage Manufacturing License” bill.

You can find more details about the hearing at http://www.le.state.ut.us/asp/interim/Commit.asp?Year=2008&Com=INTBUS .

This is the proposed amendment to Utah Law giving people like myself the right to brew at home.  Lets go Utah!  You can do it.

Baracks’s thoughts on the RNC

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

“You wouldn’t know that this is such a critical election by watching the convention last night. I know we had our week.  And the Republicans deserve theirs.  But it’s been amazing for me to watch over the last two nights.  If you sit there, and you watch it. You’re hearing a lot about John McCain, and he’s got a compelling biography as a P.O.W.

You’re hearing an awful lot about me.  Most of which is not true.

What you’re not hearing is a lot about you.

You haven’t heard one word about how they’re going to make the health system work – so that when a union is negotiating with a company it’s not all just a discussion about higher premiums and you guys can actually start talking about higher wages and benefits.

You haven’t heard one word about how we’re gonna create more apprenticeship programs like the ones we have here. Or give other people a chance to train in new trades.

You haven’t heard one word about getting serious about green and alternative energy.  The kind of work that is resulting in all the expansion and hiring here.

You haven’t heard one word about how we’re going to strengthen unions so that working people get a decent stake.

You haven’t heard one word about how we’re going to improve math and science education so that we can hire more engineers to create more products in green technology.

You haven’t heard one word about how  we’re going to deal with any aspect of the economy that is affecting you and your pocket day to day.

Haven’t heard one word about it.  Literally.  Two nights.  They have not said a word about it.  They have not said a word about it.  They’ve had a lot to say about me. But they haven’t had anything to say about you.

And the thing that I’m insisting on in this election is that we can’t keep playing the same political games we always play. ”

By raising your voice on the issue of clean energy, you’re in some very good company. A great many Unlikely Alliances have formed to make the call for clean power:

  • The United Steelworkers, as part of the Blue-Green Alliance, have joined the We Campaign. They see the great jobs potential in the renewable energy sector, and they want safe and affordable energy sources for our manufacturing sector.
  • Green For All brings renewable energy jobs right to the heart of America’s inner cities. They are unifying diverse urban communities around a clean energy future.
  • The 25 x ’25 Alliance, based largely in America’s Farm Belt, is pushing the U.S. to derive 25% of its energy from renewable sources by 2025. It’s an ambitious, but attainable, goal – so long as Congress acts.

    Hola!

I’ve updated and added a few more things to the site over the past couple of days. It is starting to be an addiction. It’s probably not healthy.

I have completely changed the contact us page to include a form for email, and our office phone number. I have also added our first T Shirt to the new buy page. It’s just a trial right now, and I haven’t even seen what it will look like, but I’ve got a couple on the way so we’ll see. I’m worried the logo will turn out bad…

The first batch of beer is coming along ok. Primary Fermentation is about done so hopefully I’ll be bottling in another week or so… Then comes the hard part… waiting to try it!

Hope to see some folks at the Live Green festival tomorrow.
