Utah’s beer community will soon have a new place to satisfy their beer cravings. After a year of planning and obstacles the Beerhive is finally in the home stretch. I got a preview last night of what is sure to be one of downtown’s preeminent hot spots.
First off this place is all bar. The bar in this place may be one of the longest in the state. It spans nearly fifty feet and has a beautiful, grand back-bar that’s near twenty five feet tall. The refrigeration unit is massive and has room for all the kegs and hundreds of bottles of beer. Twenty-four taps are plumbed right now and there are talks of installing a cask beer engine.
The Beerhive also sports a first in the area, a frosted rail. It’s a strip of ice that spans the bar to ensure that drinks maintain the perfect temperature… If desired.
The downstairs area is quite nice with exposed 19th century brick and stone walls. Pool tables and a possible shuffleboard table will occupy most of this space.

Last Friday, One Little Mexican and his wife attended the American Homebrewers Association rally held at Squatters brewery in Salt Lake City, Utah.
We were hosted by Squatters Head Brewer Jenny Talley. She gave us a lot of good information, and also gave us a guided tour of the entire brewing facility. It was really cool to see how a real micro brewery does their thing. The equiptment they use and the process is so cool. OLM can only dream of one day doing it like that.
We also got free appetizers and discounted pints, so of course we had to try a few. They have a Vienna Lager and a Dunkel that are incredible.
Also, BTW – Jenny mentioned that Utah was finally going to make home brewing legal in the state this year. That means we can have legitimate brewing clubs, and amateur competitions sponsored by real companies, and all that. It should be huge for those of us that would like to sample other brews and see how our own stand up to the competition.
I encourage all the homebrewers out there to attend a rally if one is held in your area. I am a member of the AHA, and I highly recomend it to any who are serious about becoming better brewers.
Cheers!

I bottled the Amber Ale today. Should be drinkable in 10 to 14 days. We’ll see. I had a bit of a rough time with a couple things, but it looked and smelled good going into the bottles.
Stay tuned.
I ran into some delays, but finally brewed up the Amber last night. It’s bubbling like mad today and fermentation is going strong! Bottling in 2 weeks or so, drinking in a month!
Here are some pics:
We’ve got the recipe and the ingredients… now we just need to brew! Since we just moved we’re still setting up the brewing area, but I hope to have it ready next week.
We are heading to Idaho this weekend, and will be sampling some good brews while there.
I hope to get the Amber brewed and fermenting by next weekend cause we’re about out of the English Ale. We had a BBQ to celebrate our new location last weekend, and the majority vote was that our English Ale tasted similar to Newcastle Brown. I will be happy with that outcome anytime!
More next week…

The English Ale is halfway gone already! We have finally relocated and will be getting everything set up within the next week. Hopefully I will have a batch fermenting within a week or so. I’m hoping to make a good summer ale or something. We’ll see.
Check back for updates in the next week or so.
