The Best Beer in the Universe

The world of beer just got a whole lot bigger: Sapporo Breweries announced plans to brew suds from barley grains that traveled in outer space. The Japanese beermaker says they’re harvesting the grains this weekend, and a pilot edition of 100 beers will be ready in November.

The grains were in space as part of a science experiment to test the adaptability of plants to environmental changes and the impact from stresses such as space travel. Sapporo partnered with Okayama University biologists working with the Russian space team. The team took 26 grams (0.9 ounce) of barley into space for storage inside the space station from April to September 2006.

Sapporo planted 4 grams (0.14 ounce) of the barley grains that returned from space at its research farm northeast of Tokyo in March 2007.

Who knows if the new brew will taste out-of-this-world, but we’re always interested in expanding our beer universe. The only hitch: Sapporo says they don’t plan on selling the 100 bottles.
